Downhill is one of the fastest growing segments of mountainbiking.
Over the last 15 years the level of development experienced an incredible enhancement which (oder that?) also affected track-design and riding style. Due to the high demands on material, full-suspension with about 8 inches of travel, hydraulic disk brakes and chainguides are standard today.
Since durability is essential the weight of a state of the art downhill-bike reaches from 16 to 20 kgs and can cost over 6000€. Some prototypes are even more expensive.
For several reasons, especially frame geometry, gear ratio and weight a downhillbike is not suitable for riding uphill. Therefore the rider uses a gondola or an alternative shuttle service to get to the start of the track.
